What is a cylindrical mirror? What are its applications

Cylindrical mirrors are an important optical element with a wide range of applications in several fields.

Definition and basic characteristics:

A cylindrical mirror is an optical element with a cylindrical shape whose main characteristic is that it has curvature in one direction and is flat or has a different curvature in the direction perpendicular to it. This particular shape allows a cylindrical mirror to focus, diverge or change the direction of propagation of light in a particular direction.

For example, in some optical systems, a cylindrical mirror can be used to correct for aberration and is particularly effective when dealing with light beams having a particular shape or direction. It can adjust the shape and direction of the beam to meet specific optical needs.

 

 

Areas of application:

High-energy laser weapons: the pillar mirror plays a key role in high-energy laser weapons. It can shape and focus the laser beam to increase the energy density and precision of the laser, thus enhancing the power and effectiveness of the weapon.

Synchrotron Radiation System: In synchrotron radiation system, the cylindrical mirror is used to focus and guide the synchrotron radiation beam to meet the needs of scientific research and experiments. It improves the intensity and stability of the beam and provides a high-quality light source for various scientific researches.

MRI system: In MRI system, cylindrical mirrors can be used to design gradient coils to improve the resolution and accuracy of imaging. Processing technology and quality requirements:

Processing technology: high precision cylindrical mirror optical elements require advanced processing technology to ensure their surface quality and optical performance. Traditional grinding and polishing technology and computer-controlled optical surface molding (CCOS) are two common processing methods. The traditional grinding and polishing technology is relatively mature, but has the problems of low efficiency, high roughness, and surface/subsurface damage, etc. The CCOS technology can improve the machining accuracy and efficiency, but also has its limitations. To address the shortcomings of the existing processing methods, the researchers proposed a new process of magnetorheological polishing of aspheric cylindrical mirrors with a symmetric structure, which reduces the surface roughness of cylindrical mirrors and improves the accuracy of the face shape.

Quality requirements: High-precision cylindrical mirrors not only require extremely low surface roughness, no surface/subsurface damage and low residual stress, but also need to ensure the parallelism and perpendicularity of their cylindrical bushes. These quality requirements are critical to the performance of cylindrical mirrors in various optical systems.
